Spain visa from Dubai and Abu-Dhabi 2026: complete guide

If you are planning a trip to Spain from the UAE in 2026, this article will help you learn more about obtaining a Schengen visa for residents of Dubai and Abu-Dhabi. We will explain who needs a visa, what documents to prepare, how the application process works, how much it costs, and what to pay special attention to in order to increase your chances of approval. We will cover all the steps to ensure your trip to Barcelona, Madrid, or the Costa del Sol coast goes smoothly.

Remember that the final decision on issuing a Schengen visa is made by the consulate. Please always verify current information on fees and timelines with official sources before submitting your application.

Do UAE residents need a visa for Spain?

The answer to this question depends on your passport, not on your UAE resident status.

UAE citizens can stay in Spain and other Schengen Area countries without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. But it is important to remember about changes: the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), expected to launch in 2027, will require citizens of visa-free countries, including Emiratis, to register online before travelling. Monitor official news for updates.

For all other UAE residents whose passports require a visa to enter the Schengen Area (citizens of India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Egypt and many other countries), obtaining a Schengen visa (Type C) is mandatory, regardless of holding a valid UAE residence permit.

Please note: your UAE residence visa must be valid for at least three months after your return date from the Schengen Area.

When Spain must be your main destination

The main destination rule states that you must apply for a Schengen visa at the consulate of the country where you plan to spend the most days. If you plan to visit several Schengen countries (for example, Spain and France), and you will be staying in Spain the longest, then you must submit your documents to the Spanish visa application centre.

If the number of days in each country is equal, apply at the embassy of the country you enter first.

Documents required for a Spain visa from the UAE

Gathering documents is the most critical step. An incomplete package is one of the main reasons for refusal. Here is a full checklist – save it so you do not miss anything.

Passport

  • Valid for at least 3 months after your departure date from the Schengen Area.
  • Issued within the last 10 years.
  • Has at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps.

UAE residence visa and Emirates ID

  • A valid UAE residence visa in your passport or on a separate page.
  • Copies of Emirates ID (front and back sides).

Completed application form

The standard Schengen visa application form, printed and signed by the applicant.

Financial guarantees

  • Bank statements from the last 3-6 months, stamped by the bank. A stable account balance is preferred. Also, there should be no sudden large deposits shortly before the trip. Ideally, income should appear regular and stable. For a short trip (1-2 weeks), a balance of AED 15 000 to AED 25 000 is recommended.
  • Provide a sponsorship letter if another person is covering the costs of the trip.
  • Please note that in 2026, Spain changed the minimum financial requirements at the border. Even with a valid visa, upon entry you must have funds at the rate of €122 per day, with a minimum of €1,099 for the entire trip. These funds can be confirmed with cash, credit cards, or traveller’s cheques.

Photograph

One colour photo, 35×45 mm, on a white background, taken within the last 6 months.

Medical insurance

A policy with minimum coverage of €30 000, valid throughout the Schengen Area for all dates of travel.

Proof of employment

  • Employed persons need to provide a certificate from their workplace on company letterhead, stating position, salary, and dates of paid leave (NOC).
  • For business owners: trade licence and corporate bank statements.

Travel itinerary

  • Flight tickets: round-trip flight reservations. You do not need to purchase tickets before obtaining the visa.
  • Accommodation: hotel booking confirmation for all dates of travel, or an invitation from a host, which must be obtained from the Spanish police. If you are travelling through multiple cities, make sure you have confirmation for every overnight stay. Mismatches in dates are a frequent cause for additional questions

Cover letter

A brief letter describing the purpose of the trip, your planned route, and a list of attached documents.

How to apply step by step

The application process is standardised and proceeds as follows.

Online appointment booking

You can submit your application at one of the visa application centres in Dubai or Abu-Dhabi by booking an appointment online on the official website. Please note that the appointment will be scheduled at the designated centre location.

  • Dubai: I Rise Tower, 9th Floor, Office C3, Barsha Heights (Tecom).
  • Abu-Dhabi: Tamouh Tower, 13th Floor, Marina Square, Al Reem Island.

Tetiana, visa expert at The Visa Services:

“We advise booking well in advance. During peak season (summer, holidays), slots at the visa application centre are taken within seconds. We recommend applying 6-8 weeks before your trip, especially if you are planning to travel this summer.”

Document collection

Gather a complete package of originals and copies according to the checklist above.

Visit to the visa application centre

Arrive at the scheduled time with your complete document package. At the centre, your fingerprints will be taken, and a photo will be taken. If you have already submitted biometrics for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, you do not need to provide them again, as your data will appear in the system.

Fee payment

Pay the consular fee and the service fee of the visa application centre.

Application tracking

After submitting your documents, you will receive a tracking number to check the status of your application on the centre’s website.

Spain visa fees and processing time

Consular fee (children under 6)Free

Typically, a decision is made within 15 calendar days. In complex cases or if additional verification is required, the processing time may be extended to 45 days. During the summer months, and before holidays (e.g., Eid al-Adha), processing times can increase to 6-8 weeks.

Applying from Dubai & Abu Dhabi

You can submit your application at the visa application centre in either Dubai or Abu-Dhabi, regardless of your emirate of residence. Choose the location most convenient for you when booking your appointment online. Both centres follow the same procedures and submit applications to the Spanish Consulate.

Multi-city trips: proving accommodation across Spain

If your itinerary includes several Spanish cities (for example, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville), you must have booking confirmations for each city for every night. Ensure the dates on your bookings are sequential and cover your entire stay period. Inconsistencies between your flight dates, hotel bookings across multiple cities, and your cover letter are a common reason for refusal.

Common reasons Spain visa applications are refused

Knowing these typical mistakes will help you avoid them. Remember that this is a general list; each situation requires individual review.

  • Incomplete or sloppy document package. Missing documents, lack of copies, or an unsigned application form is a sure path to refusal.
  • Insufficient financial guarantees. A weak account balance or irregular income. Depositing a large sum shortly before submission can also raise suspicion.
  • Data discrepancies. Dates on hotel bookings do not match dates on flight tickets, insurance, or the cover letter.
  • Weak ties to the UAE. The consulate must be confident you will return. A recent job change, lack of family, or property in the UAE can be a weak point.
  • Incorrect choice of the country of application. If Spain is not your main destination country, your application will be rejected.
