If you live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi and are choosing which Christmas markets in Europe to visit in 2026, you have an advantage: direct flights from Dubai to Vienna, Prague, and Budapest take less than seven hours. This selection of five cities — Strasbourg, Vienna, Prague, Cologne, and Budapest — will help you choose a market. All five countries are in the Schengen Area, so one visa covers the entire route. Below are the 2026 dates, direct flights from the UAE, and the answer to the main question: where to go after Christmas for New Year’s.
European Christmas markets 2026: The essentials at a glance

If you want to spend both Christmas and New Year in Europe, choose Prague, Schönbrunn in Vienna, or Cologne’s Old Town. Here are the details.
Christmas market in Strasbourg
Dates: November 27 — December 24
Where: Place Broglie, Cathedral Square, and other squares of the Grande Île.

Strasbourg calls itself the “Capital of Christmas.” Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570 and is considered one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. The large tree on Place Kléber reaches 30 meters.
What you must try at the market: mulled wine (called vin chaud here), Alsatian bredele cookies, and tarte flambée.
Note that the market closes on December 24, and the city returns to its usual rhythm of life.
There is no direct flight from Dubai. The optimal route: fly to Frankfurt (FRA) or Paris (CDG), then take a TGV or ICE train to Strasbourg (3 to 4 hours with a connection). Total travel time — from 9 hours.
Christmas market in Vienna
Dates: November 6 — January 6
Where: City Hall Square — November 13 — December 26, 2026, daily from 10:00 to 22:00 (December 24 until 18:30). Schönbrunn Palace — November 6, 2026 — January 6, 2027.

The Vienna market at City Hall Square is one of the most famous in Europe. In winter, an ice rink is flooded in front of the city hall, and hundreds of wooden huts line the alleys. Schönbrunn offers a more intimate atmosphere against the backdrop of the imperial palace.
What you must try: punch (served in mugs in Vienna), Viennese sausages, and strudel.
City Hall Square closes on December 26. The market at Schönbrunn operates until January 6, 2027. If you want to stay in Europe for New Year’s, this is one of the suitable options for a trip.
There are direct flights from Dubai with Emirates and flydubai. Travel time — about 6 hours. Vienna Airport (VIE) is connected to the city center by the City Airport Train (CAT, 16 minutes) or the cheaper S7 (about 25 minutes) to Wien Mitte.
Christmas market in Prague
Dates: November 28, 2026 — January 6, 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00.
Where: Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.

Prague’s markets are the best choice for those traveling to Europe specifically for New Year’s. On Old Town Square, next to the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the country’s main Christmas tree is erected, and the atmosphere here is more fairy-tale-like than at many Western European markets. By the way, prices are more affordable than in Vienna or Cologne.
What we recommend trying: Svařák (mulled wine), trdelník, roasted chestnuts. Currency — Czech koruna (CZK).
The market is open on December 31 and January 1. You can stay here for New Year’s.
Emirates operates a direct flight DXB–PRG from Dubai, travel time 6 hours 25 minutes. Prague Airport (PRG) is connected to the center by bus and metro.
Christmas market in Cologne
Dates: November 16 — December 23.
Where: Market at Cologne Cathedral (Roncalliplatz) — November 16 — December 23, 2026. Market in the Old Town (Heinzels Wintermärchen) — November 23, 2026 — January 10, 2027. Harbor Market — November 13, 2026 — January 3, 2027.

Cologne offers several different authentic markets at once. The Cathedral Market is the most touristy and monumental: the huts stand right at the foot of the Gothic cathedral. Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town is cozier, with a focus on artisan goods. The Harbor Market is the most modern.
What to try at the market: potato pancakes (Reibekuchen) with apple sauce, mulled wine, Kölsch beer.
The Cathedral Market closes on December 23. The markets in the Old Town and the harbor operate during the New Year holidays.
There is no direct flight from Dubai. You can fly via Düsseldorf (DUS) or Frankfurt (FRA), then take an ICE train to Cologne (from 1 to 1.5 hours from DUS, about 1 hour from FRA). The Köln Hbf station is right next to the cathedral.
Christmas market in Budapest
Dates: November 13 — December 31
Where: Vörösmarty Square — November 13 — December 31, 2026. Advent market at St. Stephen’s Basilica — 2026 dates not confirmed at the time of publication (in 2025 it operated until January 1).

Budapest offers two different atmospheres. Vörösmarty Square is a classic market with artisan stalls and an ice rink. At St. Stephen’s Basilica, a light show is projected onto the façade in the evening — the projection comes to life every half hour. This spectacle is worth seeing even for those indifferent to markets.
What you must try: Kürtőskalács (chimney cake with cinnamon), lángos, goulash. Currency — Hungarian forint (HUF).
Vörösmarty Square operates on December 31 from 11:00 to 3:00 am — it’s a full-fledged New Year’s venue.
There are direct flights from Dubai with flydubai and Wizz Air. Travel time — about 5 hours 30 minutes. Budapest Airport (BUD) is connected to the center by bus 100E (30 minutes).
How to visit several markets in one trip
Danube Route: Prague → Vienna → Budapest. All three cities are connected by trains. Prague–Vienna — about 4 hours, Vienna–Budapest — 2 hours 40 minutes. Tickets purchased in advance (ČD, ÖBB, MÁV) cost less.
Rhine Route: Cologne → Strasbourg. By train 3.5–4 hours with a connection in Mannheim or Frankfurt. If flying from Dubai, you can arrive in Frankfurt, go to Cologne, then to Strasbourg, and fly home from Paris or Zurich.
New Year’s Option: Prague from December 30 to January 2 + Vienna (Schönbrunn) from January 2 to 4. In Prague, you can visit the Christmas market and celebrate New Year, in Vienna — continue strolling through markets after New Year.
Arrival in one city, departure from another
An open-jaw ticket — when you arrive in one city and depart from another — often costs no more than a regular round-trip and saves a day on the return. Emirates and flydubai allow combining arrival in Prague with departure from Vienna or Budapest. Check options on the carriers’ websites.
What you need to know before your trip
Temperatures in December: Vienna, Prague, Budapest — daytime from +1°C to +4°C, at night around 0°C. Strasbourg and Cologne are slightly warmer: daytime +4°C…+6°C. It’s better to plan layered clothing options and take waterproof shoes.
At most markets, you pay a deposit (2–3 EUR) for the mulled wine mug. Return the mug — get your deposit back. Or keep it as a souvenir.
Take cash; cards are not accepted everywhere. In Prague and Budapest, keep local currency (CZK, HUF) on hand for small purchases.
Time difference: The UAE is 3 hours ahead of all five cities (winter time CET, UTC+1).
Who needs a visa to Europe from the UAE
All five countries on the route — France, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, and Hungary — are in the Schengen Area. One visa covers the entire trip if you apply at the consulate of the main country — based on length of stay or purpose of trip; if equal — the country of first entry through the external border of Schengen. UAE residents can apply for a visa from 6 months to 15 calendar days before the trip through visa centers in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Why apply for a Schengen visa through The Visa Services?
Applying for a Schengen visa is a standard procedure, but nevertheless requires very careful preparation. We know the UAE very well. We understand the specifics of submitting documents through local visa centers and what visa officers usually pay attention to when reviewing documents. Our visa experts know how to prepare a convincing application, even if family members have passports from different countries, you need a visa urgently, or you have recently received a refusal.
We covered in detail how to apply for a Schengen visa from Dubai in this article.

Natalia, visa consultant at The Visa Services:
“If you want to get to the markets in November or December, you need to apply for a visa now. November markets open from mid-month, and appointments at consulates in Dubai for this period are booked up very quickly. It’s high season right now: people are planning trips either for the Christmas holidays or for UAE National Day — December 2 and 3, which this year give long weekends.
Many take additional days off and get 5 or 9 consecutive free days — and all these people are simultaneously looking for submission slots. If you wait until the end of October, there may no longer be free slots for November. We recommend starting to book 6–8 weeks before your desired travel date, and in high season — even earlier.”

Most expat nationalities in the UAE — including India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Russia — need a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa. Your nationality decides whether you need a visa; your UAE residence decides where you apply.
How much does mulled wine cost at the market?
On average 4–5 EUR in Vienna and Cologne, 60–80 CZK in Prague, 800–1200 HUF in Budapest (plus a deposit for the mug).

Market dates and opening hours are set by organizers — check them on official websites before booking. The decision to approve a Schengen visa is made by the consulate; we do not guarantee it. This material is for informational purposes and is not legal or immigration advice.
