A Schengen Type C visa allows you to travel freely across the 29 member countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your nationality determines the visa requirement, not your country of residence. Holding a UAE residence visa does not change this. The only way to enter the Schengen Area without a visa is to hold a passport from a visa-exempt country, which Pakistan does not.

What your UAE residence changes — and what it does not

While your UAE residence does not exempt you from the visa requirement, it determines where and how you apply. As a legal resident of the UAE, you are entitled to apply for your Schengen visa at the consulate or visa application centre of your destination country located in the UAE. This removes the need to travel back to Pakistan to apply.

A stable employment record, salary, and tenancy contract in the UAE strengthen your application because they demonstrate strong ties to your country of residence, suggesting you have a reason to return after your European trip.

Which Schengen country should you apply to?

You must submit your visa application to the consulate of the Schengen country that is your “main destination.” The main destination is the country where you will spend the most nights during your trip. If you are visiting multiple countries and the number of nights is equal, you must apply to the consulate of the country that is your first point of entry into the Schengen Area. Applying to the wrong consulate is a common ground for refusal and is not a minor administrative error.

Applying for a multi-country trip

Consider a 10-night trip: 4 nights in France, 3 nights in Italy, and 3 nights in Switzerland. You must apply for a Schengen visa at the French consulate because France is your main destination (4 nights > 3 nights). If you were spending 3 nights in each country, you would apply at the consulate of the country you enter first.

Documents for a Schengen visa for UAE residents

The core document set for a Schengen visa application from the UAE includes:

• Completed and signed visa application form.
• Two recent passport-sized photos: meeting ICAO standards (35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 3 months).
• Valid Pakistani passport: issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months beyond your return date, with at least 2 blank pages.
• UAE residence visa and Emirates ID: copies of your valid UAE residence visa page (must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your return date for most consulates) and your Emirates ID.
• Travel medical insurance: covering at least €30 000, valid across all Schengen states, and covering the full duration of your trip.

While the core set is universal, Pakistani applicants from the UAE are often advised to provide additional evidence to strengthen their file and prove their ties to the UAE:

Tenancy contract: a copy of your UAE tenancy contract demonstrates stable residence.

Employer’s NOC (No Objection Certificate): a letter from your employer on company letterhead confirming your approved leave and that your position will be held for your return.

Sponsorship letter and documents: if a sponsor is covering your trip, submit a formal sponsorship letter along with your sponsor’s financial documents (bank statements, salary certificate) and proof of their UAE residence.

Consistency in names: ensure your name is spelled identically across your passport, Emirates ID, and all supporting documents.

Fees and processing times

The Schengen visa fee is standardised across all member states: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–11, with children under 6 being exempt. This fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is refused.

Check the current rate on the day of your appointment. You will also need to budget for optional services like courier passport return.

The standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the date the consulate receives a complete and admissible application. However, this can be extended to 45 calendar days in individual cases where further checks are required. Applying 6–8 weeks before your intended travel date is the best way to account for this.

How to apply for a Schengen visa from the UAE step by step

Step 1. Identify the Schengen country where you will spend the most nights. Collect all your documents well in advance. The appointment wait is often the longest part of the process.

Step 2. You will need to fill out the Schengen visa application form online. In many cases, this must be done as part of the appointment booking process. Fill it out accurately with information that matches your supporting documents.

Step 3. Book a slot through the official website of the visa application centre for your destination country. You can apply up to 6 months before departure, but you must do so at least 15 days before your flight. Appointments are often in high demand, especially in peak seasons (summer and winter holidays), so book 3-4 months in advance if possible.

Step 4. Print the completed application form and assemble all your original documents, along with copies. Ensure the order matches the checklist provided by the visa application centre.

Step 5. Arrive on time at your chosen visa application centre. You will submit your documents, have your biometric data (fingerprints and a photograph) taken, and pay the visa and service fees. If you have provided biometrics within the last 59 months, they may be reused.

Step 6. After submission, you will receive a reference number to track your application status online through the visa centre’s portal.

Step 7. Once a decision has been made, you will be notified to collect your passport. You can either collect it in person or pay for a courier return service.

Where to apply in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi visa application centre generally accepts applications from residents holding Abu Dhabi or Al Ain residency. Residents of other emirates (Dubai, Sharjah, etc.) must apply at the Dubai visa application centre.

Airport Transit visa
