Do UAE residents need a visa for France?

The answer depends on your nationality, not on your UAE resident status.

UAE citizens: visa is not needed. UAE passport holders can visit France and other Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

UAE residents with other, non-European passports: a Schengen visa is required.

France Schengen visa types for short stays

For short trips to France (up to 90 days), the main option is the Schengen visa type C. It works for tourism, business, visiting family or friends, and taking part in cultural or sports events.

Depending on your plans, the visa can be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry. A multiple-entry visa allows several entries into the Schengen area during its validity, but the total stay is still limited by the 90/180 rule.

Important: all France visa applications from residents of all UAE emirates are processed through the visa application centre in Abu Dhabi. Dubai also has a visa center, but it’s only open two days a week, so it’s more expensive and has fewer appointment slots available.  Residents of Dubai and other emirates need to plan a trip to the capital for biometrics and document submission.

Documents required for a France visa from the UAE

Careful document preparation increases your chances of visa approval. Here is the full list of papers you need to prepare as a UAE resident.

• Passport valid for at least 3 months after your return date from the Schengen area and with at least 2 blank pages for the visa. The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years.
• UAE residence and Emirates ID valid for at least 3 months after your return from the trip.
• Completed, printed and signed application form, which you can find on the official France-Visas website.
• Two recent colour photos on a white background, size 35×45 mm, meeting Schengen standards.
• Medical insurance with coverage of at least €30 000, valid throughout the Schengen area and for the whole trip.
• Proof of flight and hotel bookings with a detailed itinerary there and back. Or an invitation from the host for all dates of the trip.
• Bank statements for the last 3-6 months with enough balance to cover trip expenses (around 15 000 AED).
• A letter from your employer on company letterhead stating your position, salary, and confirming approved leave. For business owners — a copy of the trade licence.
• A cover letter addressed to the consulate with a detailed description of your trip purpose, itinerary, and plans.

How to apply step by step

The application process in 2026 has 5 steps.

1. Visit the official France-Visas portal, fill out the application form, and print the completed form.
2. Book an appointment at the visa application centre in Abu Dhabi. It is recommended to do this 6-8 weeks before your trip.
3. Gather the full set of documents from the list above. Make sure all documents are translated into English or French (if required).
4. On the appointed day, go to the visa application centre in Abu Dhabi, submit your documents, and complete the fingerprinting procedure.
5. Wait for the decision and track your status using the tracking number they give you at the visa application centre.

Processing times

Standard time: 15 calendar days.

Maximum time: up to 45 calendar days in complex cases or during peak season.

Common reasons France visa applications are refused

It is important to know the mistakes applicants make so you can avoid them in your own application.

• Weak economic or social ties to the UAE: insufficient bank balance, unstable job. The consulate may suspect you will not return and refuse you.
• Wrong country choice: trying to get a visa through another Schengen country when you plan to spend most of your time in France.
• Poorly prepared document package: bank balance does not cover your expected trip expenses, or important certificates are missing.

Case study of The Visa Services

A bride contacted our agency with a request to obtain a visa to Italy for her wedding in Positano. The departure was scheduled in one month, but 28 days before the trip, she received a refusal from the Italian consulate. The wedding coordinator, hotel, and photographer had already been fully paid for, and rescheduling the date was impossible. • ties to the home country — a certificate from the bride’s employer stating her position and the date of her return to work immediately after the vacation, as well as a rental agreement for housing in Dubai;
• emphasis on urgency — we indicated the departure date in 9 days on the application form, which formally encouraged the consulate to expedite the processing.

Result

After 10 working days — a Schengen multiple-entry visa valid for 45 days. The French consul approved the visa despite the previous refusal from Italy and the applicant’s limited travel history. The wedding took place on the planned date in Positano, and all prepaid services were utilized without any losses.
