South Korea visa for UAE residents: how to apply in 2026

Whether you need a South Korea visa from Dubai depends on your passport, not on your UAE residence. Nationals of visa-free countries — including Russia, Kazakhstan, the UK, EU states and the US — travel on K-ETA (some are temporarily exempt until 31 December 2026). Nationals of India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and many other countries need a C-3-9 tourist visa, which must be applied for in person — at the Consulate General in Dubai or the Embassy in Abu Dhabi. The fee starts from USD 40, standard processing time is 7 calendar days.

Do UAE residents need a visa for South Korea?

The answer depends on your citizenship, not your place of residence. A UAE residency visa only determines where you submit documents — in Dubai or Abu Dhabi — but does not cancel the visa requirements of your passport.

Nationals of visa-free countries — including Russia, Kazakhstan, the UK, EU states and the US — may enter South Korea on a valid K-ETA permit. Russians — for up to 60 days, Kazakhstanis — up to 30 days. Nationals of India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and a number of other countries do not have this right and are obliged to obtain a C-3-9 visa through the consulate.

The two-year rule should also be taken into account separately. The Consulate General in Dubai requires citizens of 34 countries, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and a number of others, to confirm continuous residence in the UAE with a residency visa for the last two years. This rule does not apply to citizens of Russia and Kazakhstan, but directly affects many residents from South and Southeast Asia. This rule is set by the Consulate General in Dubai. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi publishes its own requirements — check them before booking.

K-ETA: who needs it and how to get it

K-ETA is issued only through the official website k-eta.go.kr or through the K-ETA app. The fee is 10,000 Korean won, the application must be submitted at least 72 hours before departure, the permit is valid for 3 years or until the passport is changed. Travellers under 17 and over 65 are exempt from obtaining it, but they will have to fill out an electronic arrival card (e-Arrival Card).

Nationals of 22 countries and regions are temporarily exempt from K-ETA until 31 December 2026; they can still apply voluntarily to skip the arrival card. Check your passport on k-eta.go.kr.

If K-ETA is refused, the path to South Korea is not closed: the next step is a C-3-9 visa through the consulate. A refusal of the electronic permit is not a ban on entry, but requires more thorough preparation of the dossier. Beware of clone websites: the official domain ends in go.kr, payment is made only in Korean won.

Which Korean visa you need and how long you can stay

Visa C-3-9 is a short-term tourist visa that allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days. It can be single-entry, double-entry or multiple-entry. For tourist trips, UAE residents most often request a single-entry visa, but with a good visa history the consulate may issue a multiple-entry visa for up to 5 years.

Documents for a South Korea visa from the UAE

The basic document package for a C-3-9 visa includes a passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining, a completed application form, a colour photo 3.5 × 4.5 cm on a white background, a copy of the UAE residency visa and Emirates ID, as well as proof of financial solvency.

All documents must be in English or Korean. Arabic certificates and statements require translation — the original and the translation are submitted together. Freshness deadlines are strictly observed: an employment letter is valid for 1 month, a bank statement — 2 weeks, other documents — up to 3 months.

  • Passport (original + copy of the first page)

  • Copy of the UAE residency visa (validity at least 6 months)

  • Employment letter (no older than 1 month, indicating position and salary)
  • Bank statement (no older than 2 weeks, with the bank’s stamp)

  • For business owners (trade licence holders): trade licence and financial documents of the company
  • For sponsored applicants: sponsor’s documents, proof of kinship or connection

What is additionally requested from business owners, sponsored applicants and citizens from the list of 34 countries. Business owners (trade licence holders) provide a valid trade licence and bank statements for both personal and corporate accounts. If the trip is paid for by a sponsor — a spouse, relative or employer — their passport, residency visa, Emirates ID, proof of income and a document proving your connection will be required.

Citizens of countries from the list of 34, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and others, additionally confirm continuous residence in the UAE for 2 years. This rule is set by the Consulate General in Dubai. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi publishes its own requirements — check them before booking.

Proof of funds: what the consulate looks for

The official minimum balance amount has not been published, and the consulate does not guarantee approval upon reaching any specific figure. However, the statement must show stable income and a sufficient balance to pay for the trip.

There is no official minimum. The consulate looks for a balance that clearly covers the trip and regular salary credits over 3–6 months. More important is not the final figure, but the quality of the statement: regular salary deposits, absence of large loans immediately before submission and logical expenses. A large deposit a week before the visit to the consulate raises questions.

South Korea visa fees in 2026

The consular fee for a C-3-9 visa is USD 40 for single-entry, USD 70 for double-entry and USD 90 for multiple-entry. Fees may vary by nationality. Payment is accepted by card only, cash is not accepted. The fee is non-refundable: in case of refusal, the money is not returned, and the documents are also not returned.

At the consulate rate* (1 USD = 3.68 AED), a single-entry visa will cost approximately AED 147. The final cost may be higher due to expenses for photographs, bank certificates, document translations and transport to the consulate. There is no expedited service: you cannot pay extra to speed up processing.

How to apply from the UAE, step by step

Step 1. Determine your category. Check whether you are entitled to K-ETA by passport. If not, or if K-ETA has already been refused — prepare documents for a C-3-9 visa.

Step 2. Book an appointment at the consulate or embassy. A tourist visa is booked online through the consulate’s system. Walk-ins are not accepted; you need an appointment. Being more than 10 minutes late cancels the appointment.

Step 3. Collect documents taking into account freshness deadlines. Statement — 2 weeks, employment letter — 1 month. Check the transliteration of your name: it must match in all documents.

Step 4. Come in person and pay the fee by card. Submission is in person only, the applicant must speak English or Korean.

Step 5. Wait for the decision. The passport remains at the consulate for 7 calendar days. There is no expedited visa. When ready, pick up your passport and print the Visa Grant Notice — visa stickers are no longer issued.

Where to apply in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The place of submission is determined not by where you live, but by which emirate is indicated in your residency visa. Residents of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah apply at the Consulate General in Dubai. Residents of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Al Dhafra and Al Ruwais — at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

If you live in Dubai, but your residency visa was issued by Abu Dhabi, you cannot apply in Dubai — the documents will be returned. And vice versa. This rule is strict, and exceptions are possible only in individual cases that the consulate considers on a case-by-case basis.

Processing time and when to apply

The standard period is 7 calendar days from the date of submission. During this period, the passport is at the consulate, and it cannot be collected earlier. There is no expedited service, so the trip must be planned with a margin.

The recommended margin before departure is at least 3–4 weeks. This time covers waiting for an appointment, preparing documents and 7 days of processing. During high season — before summer holidays and holidays — free appointment slots may appear with a delay, so it is worth booking in advance.

Why Korean visa applications are refused — and how to avoid it

Refusal is most often related to documents, not to the applicant’s identity. Typical reasons: a statement older than 2 weeks, an employment letter a month old, Arabic documents without translation, insufficient balance on the account or a UAE residency visa with less than 6 months of validity remaining.

A separate category of refusals is the wrong place of submission. If you came to Dubai with an Abu Dhabi visa or vice versa, the documents will not be accepted. Less common are refusals due to weak ties to the UAE: if the applicant recently moved and cannot confirm stable employment or financial history.

In case of refusal, the fee is not refunded, documents are not returned. Re-application is possible only after 90 days from the date of the previous refusal. This makes the first submission critically important: it is better to spend time checking the dossier than to submit hastily and wait three months.

Umer, visa expert at The Visa Services, 9 years of practice in the UAE:

“Most refusals I see are related not to the passport, but to technical errors: a statement older than two weeks, different transliteration of the name, confusion with the place of submission. Dubai residents with an Abu Dhabi visa come to Jumeirah and leave with nothing — the rule ‘the emirate in the visa decides’ must be checked before booking, and not on the day of submission.

Separately about K-ETA: many Russians and Kazakhstanis believe that since a visa is not needed, there is nothing to prepare for. But refusal under K-ETA happens, and then the path through a C-3-9 visa remains open. My advice: allow three to four weeks, check the freshness of certificates on the day of submission and verify the spelling of the name in all documents. The consulate evaluates papers, not intentions.”

Using your Korean visa

Since 1 July 2020, Korean missions no longer issue visa stickers. Instead, you receive a Visa Grant Notice — an electronic document that must be printed and kept with you when boarding the flight. You must enter under the visa within 90 days from the date of issuance; stay under a C-3-9 visa — up to 90 days.

The final decision on entry is made by the border officer. A visa or K-ETA does not guarantee admission to the country. At the border, they may request a return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds. If you are planning a trip to Japan or China from Dubai, the principles are similar: a visa is a permit to enter, but not a guarantee.
