Schengen visa processing time for UAE residents is 15 calendar days from the day your application is accepted at the visa centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, extendable to 45 days in individual cases. By law, the deadline is 15 calendar days (Art. 23 Visa Code). Some consulates and visa centres quote 15 working days in their guidance, which in practice means about three weeks. According to our observations, France, Italy, and Portugal review applications the fastest, while Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and individual cases for Denmark take the longest. For UAE residents submitting documents in Dubai, the period is counted not from the moment of booking, but from the day of acceptance at the visa centre.

How long does a Schengen visa take from the UAE?
A Schengen visa for UAE residents is reviewed within 15 calendar days from the date of submission, and in exceptional cases — up to 45 days. The countdown starts from the day of document acceptance at the visa centre, not from the moment of booking an appointment. Therefore, the wait for a free slot must be added to the decision period separately. For residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this is the main practical difference: booking may take weeks, while the decision itself by law fits within 15 days.

Countries with longer processing: Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands
Belgium reviews applications from 2 to 6 weeks; in rare cases the period is extended to 60 days (above the legal maximum). Germany — 15–45 days: minimum 15 days, up to 30 days for certain nationalities, and up to 45 days for nationalities subject to prior consultation with other Schengen states. The Netherlands — 25–45 days, while the client document also indicates 15–45 calendar days after booking, and during peak delays reach up to 50 days. For these countries, the trip should be planned as “up to 45 days” and one should not count on a quick decision.
Which Schengen countries suit a short-notice trip
The shortest and most predictable period is with the first group of countries with a decision within 15 calendar days. If the trip is indeed built around France, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, and other countries with a decision within 15 calendar days, up to two weeks are allowed after document acceptance. But choosing the submission country solely by speed is not allowed — this violates the main country rule.
Calendar days vs working days: how to read processing times
15 calendar days — approximately 2 weeks. 15 working days — approximately 3 weeks excluding weekends and consulate holidays. 45 days — approximately 6.5 weeks.
| Period | Approximately |
| 15 calendar days | 2 weeks |
| 15 working days | 3 weeks |
| 45 days | 6.5 weeks |
What makes a Schengen visa application take longer
Delays are usually related to requests for additional documents, incomplete dossier, consulate holidays, consultations with other Schengen countries, and passport delivery by courier. For specific countries this applies as follows: Italy — up to 45 days in special circumstances, Czech Republic — up to 30 days and rarely up to 60, Sweden — up to 30, Norway — up to 45 during peak plus courier, Slovakia — up to 45 working days, Finland and Lithuania — up to 45 calendar days in individual cases, Belgium — up to 60 days in rare cases, Malta — up to 45 days, Denmark — up to 80 days in high season, Netherlands — up to 50 days during peak, Portugal — delays in high season.
The fee is €90 for adults, €45 for children 6–11 years, under 6 — free. The fee is non-refundable. Paid visa centre services speed up booking or make submission more convenient, but do not affect the consulate’s decision.

Zarina, visa expert at The Visa Services:
“For citizens of some countries, visa review periods in practice differ from those stated. For example, we do not recommend that Russian citizens apply through Denmark or Lithuania; it is better to choose another route. Or if you have had a refusal from one of the EU countries, we do not advise submitting again even with a strengthened document package. It is better to choose a new route.”
Case: Spain, 5-year Business visa for a property owner
Situation. The client is a South African citizen, a property owner. The trip is for business, alone, to conduct business in Spain, where he has his own company. There were previous visas in the visa history, no refusals. A Spanish business visa was requested.
Complexity. Two tasks: to obtain a booking slot within the required timeframes and to obtain a five-year multiple-entry visa. For a long-term multiple-entry visa, it is necessary to prove a stable business need for frequent trips and reliable ties with the UAE.
What we did. We booked a priority document submission. We requested from the client all documentation on his business and residence in Spain, including documents that are not even in the official list of required documents. We prepared a detailed letter explaining the reasons for frequent trips to Spain and the nature of his activity there. We added comprehensive evidence confirming the client’s return to the UAE.
Result. Visa approved: 5 years, multiple entry.

Approximately 3 weeks excluding weekends and consulate holidays.
How far in advance should I apply for a Schengen visa for New Year?

Is the passport taken during visa review?
The passport usually remains at the consulate for the entire review period, so business trips and other travel cannot be planned for this time.
